Leading Medical Device Provider DJO Incorporated Chooses Kiva to Enhance Distribution Center Efficiency

Innovative automation investment enables DJO to postpone building costly new distribution center

Woburn, MA – November 3, 2008–Kiva Systems, a developer of breakthrough robotic solutions for automating distribution centers, today announced that DJO Incorporated will install a Kiva Mobile Fulfillment System at its primary US distribution center in Indianapolis, In. DJO, a global provider of medical devices that provide solutions for musculoskeletal health, vascular health, and pain management, is purchasing Kiva’s CaseFetch Mobile Fulfillment System (MFS) for split-case picking and order assembly of large and small items. DJO expects a rapid deployment, with first orders using their Kiva MFS scheduled to ship in March 2009.

“We require our investments in automation to quickly generate returns for the company and we are particularly pleased with the strategic flexibility of the Kiva solution,” said Luke Faulstick, DJO’s executive vice president and COO. “With our rate of growth, Kiva’s scalability allows us to purchase what we need today and easily expand the system later.”

Kiva’s innovative approach to order fulfillment uses hundreds of mobile robotic drive units that bring inventory directly to workers, allowing easy and efficient access to all inventory items at all times. Elimination of operator walking and waiting enables worker productivity that is two to four times higher than with other automated systems. What’s more, because all the system components are mobile and modular, a Kiva-equipped distribution center has unprecedented flexibility when adding new products or expanding throughput—without disrupting ongoing operations.

“Kiva offers a DC automation solution that enables DJO to nearly double the capacity of its current facility,” said Mick Mountz, founder and CEO of Kiva Systems. “Scaling their existing capacity allows DJO to more effectively use its capital for expanding its business rather than increasing the overall footprint of its distribution facility.”
